NHSP02 — Manual Pensions Estimate

This shows similar information to a TRS / annual benefit statement, but may need to be requested if your TRS is not available for any reason.

When to ask for an estimate — and your right to a statement every year

Only request a manual estimate when your Total Reward Statement / Annual Benefit Statement isn't available. Your TRS already contains your pension estimate, updated every year, and you can download it in under a minute (see NHSP01).

The legal duty. The NHS Pension Scheme is a defined benefit public service scheme, so it must give you a benefit statement every year. Section 14 of the Public Service Pensions Act 2013 says:

“Scheme regulations for a defined benefits scheme must require the scheme manager to provide benefit information statements to each person in pensionable service under the scheme” … and a statement “must include— (a) a description of the benefits earned by the person in respect of his or her pensionable service”.

The Pensions Regulator's code of practice for public service schemes says the scheme manager must “issue the annual statement by no later than 31 August of the year following the period to which the statement relates”. If you ask for a statement, it must be provided “if the information has not been provided to that member in the previous 12 months”, and “within two months” (Occupational and Personal Pension Schemes (Disclosure of Information) Regulations 2013, regulation 16). Northern Ireland's HSC scheme has the same duty under section 14 of the Public Service Pensions Act (Northern Ireland) 2014.

So if NHS Pensions can't provide you with a TRS / ABS, you are entitled to an estimate each year. In practice it may take around 40 days to arrive.
